The Carrefour group was the first in Europe to open a hypermarket, a large supermarket and a department store under the same roof. They opened their first hypermarket on 15 June 1963 in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, near Paris in France.The first Carrefour store opened on 1 January 1958 in suburban Annecy near a crossroads. The group was created by Marcel Fournier, Denis Defforey and Jacques Defforey and grew into a chain from this first sales outlet. In 1999 it merged with Promodès, known as Continent, one of its major competitors in the French market. Marcel Fournier, Denis Defforey and Jacques Defforey had attended several seminars in the United States led by “the Pope of retail” Bernardo Trujillo, who influenced them to move forward with Carrefour idea.

Carrefour SA engages in the operation of grocery stores. Its business activities are divided into the following store formats: Hypermarkets, Supermarkets, Cash and Carry, and Convenience Stores. The Hypermarket stores provide customers with a simple and compact space for a faster shopping experience.

The Supermarket stores offer Carrefour brand products, as well as apparel, culture, leisure, and tableware. The Cash and Carry stores engage in the provision of self-serve wholesale catering and food industry services. The Convenience Stores provide express shopping, mobile phone top-up vouchers, and home delivery services.

In 1999, it merged with Promodes, known as Continent, one of its major competitors in the French market.In September 2009, Carrefour updated its logo.In January 2018, Alexandre Bompard announced a strategic plan for the company, entitled “Carrefour 2022”, that seeks to make Carrefour the “leader of the food transition for all”. The plan includes measures for better food and package sustainability, limitation of food waste, development of organic products, e-commerce partnerships, and two billion euros in annual investments from 2018 as well as organisational and cost reduction measures.
